Le Pin

Château Le Pin, or simply Le Pin, is a Bordeaux wine from the appellation Pomerol. The unusually small estate is located on the Right Bank of France’s Gironde estuary in the commune of Pomerol near the hamlet of Catusseau, and its wine is frequently one of the world's most expensive red wines.

The vineyards extend over 5 acres (2.0 ha) of sandy gravel topsoil on a bedrock of limestone, with a grape variety of 100% Merlotthe vines averaging 38 years of age. Typically 600 to 700 cases are produced per year, although in 2003 no wine was produced because of the drought and heatwave that year.

Still Wine

96 Neal Martin

Tasted ex-chateau and single blind. This bottle of Le Pin is very reduced on the nose and there is an odd aromatic trait reminiscent of a Hornby train set! It begins to open with continued aeration offering some attractive floral aromas and that “Hornby” tincture disappears. The palate is very sweet and ripe on the entry with chewy red fruits, huge tannins and a dense, powerful finish without compromising precision. There is balance and great focus here, but it will need a long time to come round. Tasted January 2012.
